The job search process is often described as a time consuming nightmare. By the end, no response or notification of decisions seems normal, you get excited over no’s, and “you’re hired” seems about as farfetched as winning the lottery. It is a challenging process. However, successful processes begin with a plan, and the following are some helpful tips.
Start with a written plan. Hopping online and applying right away can lead to confusion. It is much better to keep your process organized. How many jobs will you apply to each day/week/month? What outlets will you use to search for your future career? Do you know exactly for what you are searching? Answering these questions before you begin looking will make the process easier and help you narrow your search to those careers of choice.
Maintain a record of your activity. Whether it is a file on your computer or a folder on your desk, it is important to keep your records in one place. Cover letters and resumes should be gathered in one place along with any other documents that have been presented. On the computer, be sure to use professional file names. Create an Excel document that allows you to track your progress on each position for which you’ve applied. Have a column for position and company, the person to whom you sent your information and the date it was sent. In addition, have columns to record the date you sent your thank you note, date you followed up (that’s right, follow up) and any other critical information. Just like anything in life, organization and planned-out thoughts will get you much further with less stress than no approach at all.
Know your skills. It is common to jump into “selling yourself” as soon as you enter the job market, but it is crucial to know what you are selling. Sit down and list your skills, both tangible and intangible. Rank these skills in order of what you believe are most marketable for your target companies. This list will act as a reference for when you begin writing your cover letters and resumes.
Stay positive. Nobody’s perfect. Preparing yourself for mistakes or disappointments will help you through the obstacles that arise. Work hard at getting rid of negative thoughts and replacing them with positivity and determination.
Starting with a plan will help you maintain focus and better prepare you for the interviews that lie ahead.
